You will ground your MBA with six required fixed core classes that will be required for your degree, along with choices in the flexible core. The flexible structure of the core course allows you to take more electives in the first year to prepare for an internship, global experience, business venture, or other interests, and defer some core requirements to their second year. Offered as quarter or semester-long courses, the core curriculum covers traditional management disciplines
The fixed core courses within the Wharton MBA program consist of the fundamentals and analytical courses that set the stage for your education. These are classes typical of what you would take in business school, and help prepare you for your future, whether you come to Wharton with a background in business, liberal arts, engineering or more.
More than half of the core courses are flexible in order to match your learning style, interests, and goals. Within each different core area, the course choices offer additional flexibility in content, timing, and format. Subjects include:
The objectives of this course are to demonstrate the role of marketing in the company; to explore the relationship of marketing to other functions; and to show how effective marketing builds on a thorough understanding of buyer behavior to create value for customers.
This course enables students to develop the skills and concepts needed to ensure the ongoing contribution of a firm's operations to its competitive position. It helps them to understand the complex processes underlying the development and manufacture of products as well as the creation and delivery of services.
This course addresses the issues faced by managers who wish to turn opportunity into viable organizations that create value, and empowers students to develop their own approaches, guidelines, and skills for being entrepreneurial managers.
In this course, students learn about the complex responsibilities facing business leaders today. Through cases about difficult managerial decisions, the course examines the legal, ethical, and economic responsibilities of corporate leaders. It also teaches students about management and governance systems leaders can use to promote responsible conduct by companies and their employees, and shows how personal values can play a critical role in effective leadership.
These quantitative prerequisites can include a series of foundational courses, such as economics, calculus, financial accounting, economic statistics, financial management, or operations research. Some business schools provide their own abridged overview course sequence that teaches topics selected from these kinds of courses.
Many schools will not permit students to enroll in classes before they complete the prerequisites. Other schools will allow students to start, but only let them progress up until a certain point in the curriculum before they satisfy these requirements. Also, some schools impose minimum grade thresholds. Even if they passed these courses during previous undergraduate work, they might have to retake them and earn a higher grade.
Accelerated MBA programs, like the one-year program at the University of Notre Dame, often impose prerequisites. For example, the Notre Dame MBA requires that students have completed an undergraduate business degree from an accredited university where English is the native language and previous coursework in financial accounting and statistics.
Some other examples of universities that require MBA program prerequisites include Rutgers University, Fort Hays State University, Marylhurst University, and Southern New Hampshire University. SNHU is a particular case. The school may require students with non-business academic backgrounds to take a series of foundation courses at SNHU before enrolling in the MBA core courses.
Poets & Quants also notes how foundation prerequisites can drive up tuition. For example, at the State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY-Oswego), the 36-credit MBA program can quickly reach 57 credits because of foundational courses, resulting in a big tuition jump. The article continues:
The second year of the Ross MBA program allows students the freedom to customize their experience by selecting from a wide range of elective course work. A few final degree requirements (in addition to the year one sequenced core courses) are typically completed during the second year; however, these requirements are flexible, and can be completed at any time throughout the two-year program.Students must take enough coursework to complete 57 total graduate credit hours during their two years here at Ross.
Our Full-Time MBA Program is designed to be completed over four terms (2 academic years). The curriculum consists of 18 credits of required core coursework, and a minimum of 42 credits of elective courses. No transfer credits from other institutions may be applied toward the MBA degree.
Students who exempt out of core courses replace them with electives to fulfill the MBA requirement of 60 credits of graduate-level courses taken in residence at the School in four terms of study. Fifty-four of these credits must consist of in-classroom business courses.
Yes. Students with considerable background in any of the core courses (excluding Lead and Strategy), can attempt an exemption exam for each core course, which is comparable to a final exam in a given subject. This grants students the flexibility to take additional electives in place of fixed core courses whose content they have already mastered, to fulfill the MBA requirement of 60 credits of graduate-level courses taken in residence at the School in four terms of study. Fifty-four of these credits must consist of in-classroom business courses.
To be enrolled as a full-time graduate student, a student must register for at least 9 semester hours in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. If a student is enrolled in courses offered in a 7-week format, those credit hours are applied toward the 9 semester hour requirement for the entire 14-week term.
Acceptance into the program happens after the student has earned 60 credit hours of coursework. Admission is by a committee chaired by the graduate program director, consisting of the graduate program director and the graduate program advisor.
If any of these requirements is violated, the student will be withdrawn from the ABM program. If a student is withdrawn from the ABM program, they will retain credit for the courses already taken in the program.
The specific courses that are required for an Accounting major are designated by the department and cannot include the introductory core courses (ACCT 6110 and ACCT 6130). Each accounting major is required to take one course in financial accounting (currently ACCT 7420). In addition, a major is required to take three additional credit units from all of the graduate courses offered by the department. Courses taken to satisfy the accounting major cannot be taken on a pass/fail basis. From time to time an individual student wishes to pursue a course of study that extends beyond the coursework offered by the department. In that case, the student will elect an independent study course. A maximum of one credit unit of independent study may be counted toward the accounting major, but only when both of the following conditions have been satisfied:
*Choose any four credit units from the list. As described above, under approved circumstances, an independent study within the Accounting Department may be substituted for one of the four course units.

As a candidate for a Vanderbilt MBA, you will study on campus for two years for a minimum of 62 credit hours. During your first year, you will receive an intense and immediate immersion in the fundamentals of management through 11 required core courses.
