Castlegar Secondary School teacher Damian Moulton-Grey pleaded guilty to impaired driving and uttering threats in 2005, but according to the Castlegar school board, he never underwent any treatment or rehabilitative counselling.

The school board was made aware of his convictions in 2010 and Moulton-Grey has not been employed at the school since then.

"The Castlegar School District fully supports the right to a fair trial and the right of teachers to carry out their responsibilities while pursuing a teaching career," a statement from the board said on Wednesday.

"However, the board has placed Mr. Moulton-Grey on leave with pay pending the outcome of the criminal proceeding, and will not be taking any further action until the board is satisfied that all outstanding issues have been addressed."

Provincial records show Moulton-Grey was released from custody on Oct. 6, 2005, and has no record of any further legal troubles.

The school board says it has informed the Castlegar RCMP detachment, the Ministry of Children and Family Development and BC Teacher's Service Commission of his convictions.

Moulton-Grey did not respond to an interview request from CBC News.

The Castlegar school board says in a statement it is confident that the school board will be able to demonstrate that it has followed proper procedures to the satisfaction of any subsequent court.

The school board says Moulton-Grey has also been a vocal supporter of his union.

"The Castlegar School District does not condone the conduct described in these allegations and supports, and will continue to support, the well-being of all of its students," the board statement says.Q:
